Recife: A Melting Pot of Cultures and Histories

We are thrilled to share a short presentation video crafted by our collaborator Mateus Melo. Pursuing his PhD in History at the University of New Mexico, Mateus brings his expertise in producing digital humanities material to our study on Pernambuco within the collaborative spirit and scholarly commitment that define the Transatlantic Bodies Project (TBP).

In this presentation video, TBP invites you to the city of Recife, a vital historic port in Brazil’s state of Pernambuco. This bustling coastal hub served as a melting pot of diverse cultures, with Catholic immigrants from Southern Europe, Dutch and Jewish settlers, enslaved Africans and their descendants, as well as vibrant British, Portuguese, Italian, Spanish, and even German communities.

Through this presentation, we provoke insights into pivotal aspects such as the relationship between scientific advancements and public health, the complex consequences of slavery, the impact of immigration on geographical spaces that connect local urban dynamics with transnational influences. We intend to offer a fresh perspective on Recife’s historical legacy, unveiling the complexities of its past while shedding light on the intricate web of its global connections.  Pernambuco’s capital serves us as a microcosm, providing a representative example that unravels broader patterns and interconnectedness within societies and its transatlantic influences.
